Health and Safety Coordinator

Arconic Lethbridge, Alberta (Onsite) Full-Time

Arconic is currently in search of Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator to join our team in Lethbridge.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Assists EHS Manager to determine health and safety goals and strategies for the company ensuring that they meet all fiscal, strategic, and legislative requirements.
  • Implementing site specific environmental, health, and safety programs designed to meet Federal, Provincial, local, and Arconic requirements.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support for effective accident prevention and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Routinely auditing EHS program compliance.
  • Assist with developing and reviewing of EHS policies and procedures ensuring that all health and safety measures are being taken.
  • Works in partnership with supervisors, contractors’ representatives, safety coordinators to monitor contractors, processes, and work practices to ensure proper consideration and focus is placed on the environmental, health, and safety.
  • Promptly addressing safety issues and/or suggestions from the contractors.
  • Participates in the formulation, implementation, and enforcement of plant health & safety policies.
  • Supports EHS Manager and contractor SPA to implement Arconic Contractor EHS compliance standard.
  • Supports the EHS manager to ensure that all governmental legislation is being followed at all times in the plant.
  • Assist in conducting inspections of the workplace ensuring safety standards are met and being enforced consistently e.g., Weekly housekeeping and compliance audit, Fatality prevention meeting, Plant Safety Tour etc.
  • Direct planning projects aimed at integrating health and safety activities into the company’s production efforts.
  • Manage investigation and reporting of health and safety incidents and hazard assessments in Arconic IHS database.
  • Periodically act as a team leader to special task forces or teams e.g., Wellness team etc.
  • Representing the location when dealing with regulatory agencies.
  • Providing community services with help to promote the positive image of Arconic.
  • Develop, conduct, and supervise EHS trainings, including external regulatory and internal management programs.
  • Provide EHS orientation/training to new hires.
  • Guides and supports supervisors to implement Arconic Human performance module.
  • Procurement of EHS-related activities including Waste Characterization and Disposal, PPE, I/H, Noise Testing, Training Resources, and any other Environmental, Health, and Safety vendors as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Lead and oversee WCB programs, including associated claims management, disability management and return to work programs; monitor and review workplace light/modified duty accommodations and return to work programs e.g., Review of WCB cases.
  • Acquire and maintain accredited training needed in areas related to H&S for training, report submittal, and general awareness.
  • Manages the site’s inventory of PPE supplies and uniforms. Is responsible for re-ordering and responding to employee requests for assistance and problem solving.
  • Facilitates the system(s) for ensuring that all onsite training is tracked and traceable, including remaining up to date on departmental employee rosters, and proving reports as needed.
  • Organizing Joint Health & Safety Committee meeting, taking, and following up minutes of meeting.
  • Coordinating environmental compliance monitoring measurements and tracking data. 
  • Coordinating industrial hygiene monitoring measurements and tracking data.
  • Responsibility for a location’s critical safety program.

Basic Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma with 5 years' experience in Environmental, health, safety, or a related field.
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field. 
  • 3 + years’ experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Standard First Aid/Level C-CPR and AED, WHMIS certification.
  • Proficient in MS Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel. 
  • Must be extremely organized and a self-starter; able to work with limited supervision. 
  • Strong interpersonal and trouble-shooting skills; deals with conflict effectively. 
  • Must be a strong multi-tasker and must excel at coping with conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of workers compensation legislation.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Must be a highly motivated, service, and team-oriented individual with an attention to detail.
  • Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites.
  • Understanding of self-assessments or internal audit process.


Preferred Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 3 years directly related experience in the areas of Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Codes, Workplace Hazard Identification/Elimination, and Health and Safety Claims Management.
  • Prior experience in dealing with WSIB/Government agencies is an asset.

Certificates & Licenses:

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) certification is preferred.
