Director - Strategy and Project Management

Michaels Irving, TX (Onsite) Full-Time
Support Center - Irving

The Director – Strategy and Project Management is responsible for developing Strategic Planning and Project Management initiatives across the organization. This position will develop and analyze key strategic business priorities and own driving operational excellence across the organization. This position will ensure consistent and efficient execution of company initiatives that are critical to the delivery of Michaels strategic projects and programs.

Corporate Strategy:

  • Drive Michaels strategic planning process and cadence cross functionally
  • Support the development of Corporate Strategy materials for executive leadership, Board of Directors, etc.
  • Understand and stay current on industry trends and the competitive landscape
  • Identify and drive key strategic projects and orchestrate workstreams cross functionally
  • Develop deep business knowledge, experiences, and subject matter expertise from Michaels and the industry to develop insights
  • Partner with business leaders to develop and implement growth programs and strategic initiatives, with a specific focus on innovation
  • Establish long range and annual planning processes and success metrics

Project Management

  • Support the leadership of our Strategic Project Management Process
  • Work closely with stakeholders and partners to develop, track, analyze and publish project and financial reports, scorecards and performance trends.
  • Lead Monthly strategic initiative review meetings with key stakeholders and executive leadership
  • Develop standards and best practices including training, templates, strategies.
  • Define and maintain effective methodologies, guidelines and standards aimed at driving successful outcomes across projects, resulting in defined metrics being achieved or exceeded and aligned with organizational goals and strategies
  • Facilitate and govern changes in priority and demand with changes in strategy and demand as business needs change and evolve.
  • Execute demand and capacity management activities, assessing existing capacity and adjusting resources and priorities, timelines and metrics to align with strategic and organizational demands.
  • Leverage results to drive continuous improvement and results across the Strategy and Project Management team
  • Build strategic relationships across relevant business functions and teams in order to drive alignment, resolve conflicts and mitigate competing priorities.

Team Building:

  • Build effective project teams that create and generate a positive environment. 
  • Promote the success of others and constructively resolves disagreements as needed on projects.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and development as needed for Project Leads and Business Partners
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Special Certifications or technical skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experienced in project management tools
  • Experienced in SharePoint

Minimum Type of experience the job requires

  • 7+ years of Strategy consulting or 10+ years of corporate Strategy & project management experience

Other

  • Strong financial/business modeling and analysis skills
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous high-priority projects (including project management of cross-functional teams)
  • Track record of strategic thinking and proven thought leadership
  • Ability to convert high-level business objectives into concrete action plans and analytical tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, execute, manage and influence negotiation strategies
  • Executive presence to influence Executive Level Decision-Makers
  • Able to manage complex relationships with a variety of stakeholders and partners with a high degree of influence and persuasion
  • Operates successfully within a team/matrix organization to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong time management skills to adapt successfully to agility needs in workload.
  • Ability to take projects and processes, break them down into clear and simple flow charts, calendars and communication.
  • Demonstrated abilities to enact and drive change.

Preferref Education

  • MBA

Preferred Special Certifications or technical skills

  • PMI certification preferred

Preferred Type of experience the job requires

  • 10+ year’s progressive work experience, within a retail or consulting environment strongly preferred
  • Change leadership experience a plus
