VP, Product and Engineering for Operations Technology & Shutterfly Business Solutions (SBS)

This role oversees Product and Technology for our Operations Technology, which power the creation of millions of photos, books, cards, gifts, and home decor products, and Shutterfly Business Solutions (SBS), our business-to-business unit of Shutterfly,  Inc. SBS provides personalized marketing and communications solutions for businesses.

 

Position Summary:  

 Shutterfly is seeking an accomplished and dynamic VP, Product  and  Engineering to lead both Operations Technology and Shutterfly Business Solutions. The VP will lead the strategic direction, development, and execution of product and engineering initiatives that support the manufacturing capabilities of Shutterfly and product and services by SBS. This executive will be responsible for driving innovation, ensuring product excellence, and overseeing the product and engineering processes to support the growth and success of both groups. The VP will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align product and engineering efforts with business objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive software engineering strategy with a resource mix consisting of full-time employees and outsourced resources.
  • Provide visionary leadership to the engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Align software engineering initiatives with Shutterfly’s business objectives and long-term goals.
  • Communicate effectively with executive leadership, providing regular updates on engineering progress, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive product and engineering strategy aligned with SBS's business goals.
  • Drive innovation in product development and engineering practices to create high-quality, market-leading solutions.
  • Ensure the alignment of product and engineering initiatives with overall business objectives and customer needs.

Product Management: 

  • Oversee the entire product lifecycle, from ideation to launch and beyond.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define product vision, strategy, and roadmaps.
  • Ensure products meet market requirements, customer needs, and business objectives.
  • Drive prioritization and decision-making for product development initiatives.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing software engineering team, ensuring the recruitment, development, and retention of top talent.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages open communication and knowledge sharing.

Technology and Innovation:

  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of software interfaces with manufacturing equipment
  • Drive innovation in automation and AI to enhance production efficiency and quality.

Operational Excellence:

  • Optimize software to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance product quality.
  • Implement robust systems for monitoring and maintaining shipping cost optimization, load balancing, and equipment performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Develop and manage engineering budgets, forecasts, and resource allocation 

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the business leaders of SBS, operations leaders of our manufacturing plants, and other senior leaders to drive alignment and achieve business goals.
  • Communicate product and engineering strategies, progress, and outcomes to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to support product and engineering initiatives.

Compliance and Standards:

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, information security, regulations, and safety requirements.
  • Establish and maintain engineering documentation, including technical specifications, process manuals, and validation protocols.

Budget and Resource Management : 

  • Develop and manage the budget for product and engineering initiatives.
  • Optimize resource allocation to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Evaluate and manage relationships with vendors and service providers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years  of experience in product management and engineering leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of leading successful product and engineering teams in a technology-driven environment.
  • Strong experience with enterprise and B2B solutions.
  • Expertise in software development methodologies, including Agile and DevOps.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and execute methodically.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms, modern tech stacks, and scalable architectures.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance requirements in a technology-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor large, diverse teams effectively.
