Metallurgical Specialist

Arconic Davenport, IA (Onsite) Full-Time

Arconic is currently in search of a Metallurgical Specialist to join our Manufacturing, Technology, & Engineering (MTE) Team across multiple Rolling Mills and Extrusion Plants. Role located in Davenport, IA, or Alcoa, TN, or Lancaster, PA.

Primary Purpose:

  • This position is responsible to provide product and process metallurgy support to all rolled products and extrusions plants globally, with primary focus on rolled products in North America. 
  • This role will work with cross-operations teams to lead activities to support product development and process improvements across a wide range of products markets, including Aerospace, Automotive, Industrial, Packaging, and Space, with the focus on rolled products.
  • The role will work to develop product and processing recipes and implement stability tools for new and existing products to improve product attributes, process capacity and recovery, and to reduce system costs.

Key Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Drive implementation of new products through our manufacturing locations to ensure products are in-control and capable at the time of launch into production
  • Lead and/or support plant problem solving activities to improve product performance, improve process recovery, line capacity, and reduce system costs.
  • Development and improvement of, and assessment to, product and process standards, including development of reaction plan triggers for product processing levers
  • Develop of technical networks to facilitate problem solving, technical training, and company knowledge retention.
  • Implement process management stability tools to improve product and process robustness to eliminate quality excursions, improve system recovery, reduce costs, and maximize equipment uptime

Other:

  • The position requires travel, 25-50% of the time. Some of the travel may be international with the majority being in North America.
  • While this role will have global responsibility, the home location will be at our location in Davenport, IA, Alcoa, TN, or Lancaster, PA.  

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, or Materials Science from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum 5 years experience of continuous improvement of product and process metallurgy
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001, IATF 16949 and/or AS9100 certified environment 
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. §730, et seq.) and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Authorizations from the relevant government agency may be required to meet export control compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, or Materials Science from an accredited institution
  • 10 years’ experience working as a product or process metallurgist improving product attributes, system recovery, line capacities, and reducing manufacturing costs
  • Ability to work across the Arconic organization with Operations, Technology, Engineering and Commercial
  • Knowledge specific to aluminum products and manufacturing processes in an aluminum rolling mill
  • Working knowledge of aluminum physical metallurgy for both heat treated and non-heat treated products
  • Working knowledge of casting, rolling, thermal processing, and finishing processes
  • Experience implementing stability tools to lock in product and process improvements
  • Experience engaging directly with customer organizations during development and implementation phases of product development and/or responses to customer product quality complaints
