Product Development Engineer

The responsibility of this position is for the development of new products and processes to support our customers and to advance the level of technology within the braking business technology.  The advancement of technology will ensure Federal-Mogul’s technical leadership in the industry and will support the continued improvement in market position and profitability.

The work also includes general technical support throughout braking products. This could include part design, materials development, process development, validation testing, failure analysis and customer interfacing. The product development engineer is responsible for interfacing with suppliers, manufacturing facilities and the customer to develop our long-term technical strategy and to resolve technical issues on current products.

This role will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop passenger car / light truck vehicle friction formulations for use in the OE market based on knowledge of raw materials.  The key driver will be the need to maintain or improve functional performance while targeting cost reduction and better material utilization.
  • Define best cost processing methods for volume manufacture of OE formulations, using knowledge of the equipment available in the relevant production sites
  • Liaise with operations to ensure successful product launch, and to support operations in production problem solving, reducing scrap and variation

    work with manufacturing facility to process samples and evaluate concepts

  • Create and manage formulation and process releases
  • Create and manage product engineering specifications
  • Manage prototype orders and data collection
  • Report data to Research and Quality functions in written and graphical formats, including managing DVP reports.
  • Evaluate new raw materials, and maintain raw material specifications including environment, health, and safety considerations
  • Maintain raw material, formulation, and manufacturing databases to properly document trials

Bachelor degree in engineering required.  BS in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Tribology, or other appropriate discipline.  Advanced degrees in one of the above disciplines are preferred.

The preferred candidate will have 0-3 years experience in process engineering, formulation, or similar related field 

This person must possess and/or demonstrate the ability to:

  • Solid analytical thinking and abstract problem solving.
  • Effective presentation skills, particularly written and preferably oral to be able to communicate with internal and external teams.
  • Work well within a team structure and supports the team goals.
  • Understand and use general engineering practices. 
  • Able to design experiments, to perform general testing, to analyze and organize results, and publish test reports.
  • Knowledgeable in testing and evaluation of new concepts.
  • Demonstrate ability to generate new concepts, be innovative and creative
  • Good fabrication skills and ability to work with outside companies
  • Ability to work with both local and/or remote supervision
