Principal Engineer, Data Services

Yahoo Inc USA (Remote) Full-Time
Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.

A Little About Us

Yahoo News’s Data Services team builds engaging, data-driven products that guide people through everyday life decisions. We help people achieve their goals by using data to contextualize and personalize the news, whether that’s helping you choose what shows to watch, discovering which restaurants are creating buzz on social media, or better understanding how inflation is hitting your grocery bill. We do so by creating helpful and delightful digital experiences, backed by robust data sets.

A Lot About You

You are an experienced engineer who welcomes the challenge of building new product experiences from the ground up. You are comfortable being one of the first members of a newly formed team. You love to collaborate with product designers to understand customer problems and deliver great user experiences. You are highly self-sufficient and also thrive when working together with teammates. You care about the whole product experience. You enjoy sprints as much as strategy. You are curious, driven and know how to find a work-life balance.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll collaborate with a small team to design, define, build, and deliver new data services for Yahoo News.

  • We believe in learning through rapid prototyping. You’ll develop multiple early versions of new user interfaces or features, and will have to weigh the tradeoffs between quick development and future tech debt.

  • We work with data sources in the form of both static datasets and APIs. You will need to be able to write code to efficiently access them to power the product experience.

  • Code – you will spend most of your time doing front-end web development. You’ll be responsible for the technical execution of the product experience, including deciding the architecture, writing code using React, testing, refactoring, and bug fixing.

  • You’ll work with Yahoo’s engineering team to ensure that when we scale the products you build, they integrate seamlessly with our other systems, and any dependencies are well-managed.

  • We value and depend on your input! You should actively share your opinions and help shape our technical direction, best practices, product ideas, and team processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years experience building and shipping across the web

  • Proficiency in React

  • Excellent coding chops, code design skills, and practitioner of web development best practices – including object-oriented design principles; design pattern usage; writing modular, reusable, testable code; data structures; concurrency; performance profiling and tuning

  • Experience around building web features that scale, experience with caching and delivery

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and debugging skills

  • The quintessential teammate -- great communicator, adaptable, supportive, hard working, and enjoys a good laugh

  • An interest in data visualization and user interaction design is a plus

Please note: we encourage candidates who may not check all the boxes above to apply.
