ABOUT THE JOB - MACHINIST, PUMPS
Location: Pasadena Campus
Work Environment: Monday – Friday
Work Schedule/Hours: Normal Business Hours
Job Summary
The Machinist will be responsible for interpreting drawings to machine completed and repaired components. There will be an emphasis on pumps or rotating equipment in a shop environment. We will look to you to bring a safety-first mindset. You’ll work collaboratively with other Multi-Skilled technicians under the direction of the Shop Foreman.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Setting up and operating various machines and tools on a singular basis.
- Manual milling machines, Lathes, Vertical Turning Lathes and Horizontal Boring milling machines – Setup and operation
- Reading and interpreting work orders to select proper work center and identify required tooling and/or programs necessary to perform the operation.
- Makes standard shop calculations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds and speeds, to machine a variety of materials efficiently.
- Obtaining and installing proper tooling, such as jaws, chucks, tombstones, fixtures, and cutting tools.
- Using various gauges and precision instruments (i.e. intra-mics, profilometers for finish surface requirements, calipers, ID/OD micrometers, indicators, and special gaging equipment, etc.) to inspect production pieces to make necessary program and tooling adjustments.
- Cleaning and removing burrs after the operation is completed.
- Assisting manufacturing engineering in process improvements.
- Returning tooling and reporting any difficulties with tooling or material.
- Work from prints, sketches and verbal instructions.
- Develop skills and ability to run the CNC HBM.
- Immediately notifies shop supervision of any non-conformances / discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that interfaces well with customers and company team members.
- Follow safety procedures to assure a clean and safe work environment is promoted and maintained.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Read, write, speak and comprehend English.
- Set up, adjust, and operate all machine tools in your area of responsibility in order to produce various parts within specifications from blueprints.
- Read and understand basic manufacturing mechanical blueprints, and use good basic math skills in addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and work with fractional measurements and decimals.
- Proficiency with measuring equipment, such as calipers, gauges and micrometers.
- Computer proficiency. Work accurately with basic keyboard and monitor interfaced with the mainframe computer to enter work order data and correct qualities as required.
- Hold very close tolerances and surface finish requirements.
- Exceptional teamwork skills and strong communication and writing skills.
- Working knowledge or ability to learn to use a micrometer, depth micrometer, dial indicators and other precision measuring instruments.
- A demonstrated history of good attendance and a safe work record.
- Safety and Quality oriented, with attention to detail.
- You also will need to be willing to work overtime, call-ins, etc. as needed to meet customer requirements.
Education and Experience
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- 8+ years of manual machining working with manual engine lathes, VTL’s, HBM’s and surface grinders
- Experience working with very tight tolerance of +/- .001.
- Experience working with stainless steel or duplex stainless steel preferred.
- Horizontal mill experience preferred.
- Lean manufacturing methods preferred.
