Curtain Wall Designer

Arconic Harrisonburg, VA (Onsite) Full-Time

We are seeking a Curtain Wall Designer to join our Kawneer business in Harrisonburg, VA.  The role focuses on the creation of drawings related to curtain wall in commercial construction, focusing on projects post-award.  The successful candidate will have the ability to take conceptual details from the order pursuit team and then develop building enclosures, draw technical façade construction details, and assist with specification writing and review.  

Responsibilities:

  • Lead design conversations with customers and influencers (architects, contractors, consultants).
  • Review architectural and structural drawings, understand product usage and design for application, and retrieves information to complete drawing, layout or design.
  • Develop conceptual details and progress designs of the facade.
  • Create 2D and 3D presentation drawings using AutoCAD for both stick and unitized window wall and curtain wall.  This includes modifying or developing custom systems based on project scope.
  • Develop full design deliverable, including but not limited to die quality system details, glazing components and installation instructions.
  • Prepare die drawings for projects and customer requests.
  • Identify problem areas/nonstandard areas of project by reviewing architectural and structural drawings and be able to problem solve these areas.
  • Understand project flow from Sales to Estimating to Technical Services.
  • Read and interpret as sold quotes.
  • Understand and design within manufacturing and approved vendor constraints.
  • Utilize Autodesk BIM360 for project process management and issue resolution.  
  • Resolve design issues throughout the project deliverable.
  • Flexibility to attend mock-up, testing and job site inspections, including project reports for client and department.
  • Candidates must be proactive, with high organizational skills, and be client-service oriented.          

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must have demonstratable working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD software
  • Must be able to read and understand architectural drawings and specifications
  • Familiarity with BIM360 or similar cloud-based communication platforms
  • Ability to follow work instructions with an aptitude to learn new software
  • Creative thinking with problem solving abilities
  • Flexibility to accommodate project schedule to ensure deliverables are completed on time
  • Strong work ethic, sense of ownership and the ability to direct others to obtain a goal

Major Customers

  • Internal:  pre-construction / estimating, engineering, modeling, project management, manufacturing / fabrication
  • Kawneer sales dept
  • Vendor partners that may manufacture, fabricate, assemble and/or glaze our product.

Minimum Qualifications

  • AAS in Drafting and Design (2-year degree) 
  • 3 years construction industry related experience
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • 2+ years of curtain wall design experience including unitized construction
  • 2+ years of experience in the construction industry with midrise+ projects preferred
  • 3+ years of experience with either AutoCAD, Revit or Inventor
  • 3 years of curtain wall design experience including unitized construction
  • Familiarity operating in a cloud-based, collaborative environment (Autodesk BIM360 Design).
  • Familiarity with THERM7 (or similar thermal software)
  • Proficient with MS Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of Kawneer products
