ABOUT THE JOB -  NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

Location:  Houston, Westplain Campus

Work Environment: Monday – Friday 

Work Schedule/Hours:  Normal Business Hours

Pay Range:  Based on experience

Job Summary

Knowledge of valve types including control valves, valve design, valve applications, valve trim, actuation (manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric) valve accessories (positioners, etc.), hydrostatic testing, and seat testing.  Individual may be involved in new product development, redesigns of existing products, and general laboratory testing for proof of concept and evaluation testing. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise as it relates to codes and standards applicable to the Copes business.  Design assignments may include both cast and fabricated products for Copes and M&J products. Provides engineering services required to support Copes-Vulcan products including but not limited providing engineering input for quotations, sales orders, design accuracy, shop information, control valve sizing, and troubleshooting.  Responsibilities include configuring products and designs to specific customer applications, creating or approving product design layouts, drawings, and bills of material for sales orders and projects, rationalization of existing product lines, redesign for cost reductions, quality, specifications, product standardization, and product line expansions for valve product lines assigned.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

You will represent the Copes-Vulcan and M&J engineering team and be a key engineering resource supporting our Houston facility, where they handle production planning, purchasing, machining, and assembly for our Nuclear and commercial valves. In addition to product design work, you'll spend time supporting the manufacturing floor to help resolve issues and disposition parts. Finally, you will support NPD and VAVE activities for multiple product lines.

  • Contributing to the efficient running of the Design and Development Section and ensuring timely and commercially effective completion of all projects allocated to you.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and expertise as it relates to the codes and standards applicable to our business and ensuring that all design reports and technical calculations are produced in a way to satisfy these codes.
  • Developing new and improved products to meet the needs of the Company's marketing plans and to maintain the Company's leading position in the field.
  • Drafting as necessary on design projects.
  • Configuring products and designs to specific applications in power generation.

 

More specifically, you will:

  • Design technically advantageous products that meet the marketing goals of the company.
  • Develop new and cost-effective methods and materials to solve problems in performance or function.
  • Develop and maintain engineered, cost-effective products that support the Company’s goals.
  • Comply with Design Control and Stage-Gate processes while designing prototypes and products.
  • Prepare and approve product design and test plans, review designs, and recommend adequate changes to the approved models before the actual rollout of new products.
  • Meet frequently with other departments to ensure projects are meeting goals.
  • Perform other product development-related duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Interface with Product Managers, Applications Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Purchasing, and other functions during all phases of product development.
  • Provide technical follow-up after project release, including field assistance.
  • Assume technical ownership of the Company’s products.
  • Analyze product costs and prepare schedule plans for effective implementation of programs.
  • Prepare comprehensive project plans with technical objectives and detailed cost estimates.
  • Track the progress of assigned projects to report to major stakeholders.
  • Develop and review design prototypes, perform tests, and finalize product design to facilitate production.
  • Analyze new components, materials, and technologies to evaluate functionalities for all new product development.
  • Perform calculations as required to support the project design and ASME Codes.
  • Generate design manuals for new products and support the creation of technical documentation.
  • Develop product specification sheets that describe the technical aspect of the product, and provide sizing procedures, assembly procedures, and instruction manuals.
  • Support VAVE activities for existing product lines and use information as the basis for NPD.
  • Produce Design Reports, and other special technical calculations as required to support sales orders.
  • Maintain skills in 3D design and drafting on the company CAD system and use these skills in support of design projects.
  • Keep your personal knowledge current by constant reading of periodicals and by attending seminars and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with the other members of the engineering team to expedite the design process and establish priorities. Coordinate work with an international team of designers, mechanical and simulation engineers in our Bangalore Design Center.
  • Collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with design standards: ASME B16.34 (valves), ASME B&PV Code Sections I, VIII (Div. 1 & 2) (valves and pressure vessels).
  • Background in valve design, in theory, and practical application.
  • Knowledge of valve types, valve design, valve applications, valve trim, actuation (manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, motor), valve accessories (positioners, etc.), hydrostatic testing, seat leakage testing.
  • General familiarity with manufacturing processes, including castings, forgings, stamping, machining, EDM, welding, heat treat, tempering, plating, dimensional inspection, GD&T, and non-destructive testing (RT, LP, MP, hardness, PMI).
  • Understanding of statics, stress, and deflection due to mechanical and thermal loads, fatigue, heat transfer, fluid flow, vibration, steam properties.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities. Ability to be resourceful, think creatively and analytically, problem-solve, experiment and adapt, and make bold decisions and recommendations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to interact with all levels of employees from senior managers down. Outstanding relationship-building skills with the ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, at every level, strong listening skills.
  • The ability to achieve goals independently and contribute as a team player.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time, to interact with other offices and visit customer sites. You may be gone up to a week at a time during training.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and thrive under pressure.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing tasks and projects, strong organizational skills. Energetic with a clear sense of urgency and direction; able to inspire and invigorate associates at all levels; promote concepts effectively.
  • Proven track record of meeting commitments with the highest level of standards, ethics, and integrity.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • A BSME degree.
  • 3+ years of experience in design for manufacturing with control valves.
  • Experience with solid modeling, 2D drafting, use of proper tolerances and GD&T.
  • Experience with MS Excel and Word, as well as FEA and CFD tools.

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor, Vault, and AutoCAD.
  • Globe valve design experience.
  • Experience with ANSYS, Fluent, and Mathcad.
