Under the direction of the Pharmacy Director, will provide leadership, oversight, and coordination of activities related to diversion prevention monitoring procedures and practices. The Drug Diversion Prevention Technician will be responsible for the maintenance of a comprehensive controlled substance surveillance program based on regulatory body requirements including, but not limited to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and best practices. The Drug Diversion Prevention Technician will also help create and execute a comprehensive auditing program for controlled substances. The position requires extensive contact with administration, the nursing department, and hospital staff. The Drug Diversion Prevention Technician participates in standards of practice and ensures quality and patient safety regarding medication management and process improvement activities.

Completes assigned projects in a timely and proficient manner.• Ensure the timely resolution of ADM (automated dispensing machine) controlled substance discrepancies as supported by departmental policy and procedure.• Review outliers in controlled substance transactions among ADM users and work with area user management when outliers are identified.• Conduct audits for pharmacy personnel when conducting daily ADM transaction activities• Conduct audits for nursing medication administration, documentation, and waste.• Help create, implement, manage, and maintain a comprehensive surveillance, auditing, and review program to assist in the prevention and detection of controlled substance diversion.• Help lead process improvement initiatives as it pertains to controlled substance diversion monitoring and auditing processes.• Conduct random and specific audits to address areas of high-risk institution-wide.• Investigate suspected or confirmed events of controlled substance diversion generated from area auditing tools and protocols.• Utilize technical skills to generate reports and monitoring mechanisms to identify areas of risk, gaps in the current processes and area trends.• Work with internal and external leaders to promote awareness of findings, deficiencies, and areas of risk and make recommendations for process improvements.• Maintains knowledge and understanding of controlled substance law at the federal, state, and local level.• Assists pharmacy technicians in daily duties and may be required to staff as a pharmacy technician as needed.• Assists in training new pharmacy employees and pharmacy interns as needed.• Represents the pharmacy department on hospital committees as needed.• Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in fields of expertise.• Acts as a role model in demonstrating competency, teamwork, professionalism, loyalty, honesty, organization ethics, people management skills, value-added behavior, staff development, quality improvement standards, conflict resolution abilities, and decisiveness.• Performs additional job-related duties as assigned which contribute to efficient and safe operations and activities, and quality patient care, comfort, and satisfaction.Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible.
