Purpose:

Athene has an opportunity for a highly visible VP Head of Investment Accounting. The VP will lead an investment accounting team, be involved with GAAP and Statutory reporting, drive process improvements and automation, enhance the control environment and be responsible for day-to-day oversight of accounting and financial reporting activities. In addition, he/she will be a business partner with the 3rd party asset manager to ensure accurate, timely and efficient data is provided to AHL on a daily basis.


Accountabilities:

  • Report directly to SVP Finance, who oversees Investment Accounting, Derivative Finance & Operations, FP&A, Sales & Expense Reporting and Transaction Solutions.
  • Work closely with senior leaders across both Athene and Apollo to ensure investment accounting activities necessary to close the company’s books and records are performed in a timely, efficient and well controlled manner.  Key leaders include:


-SVP, Athene Corporate Controller

-SVP, Athene Derivative Finance

-VP, Athene Finance Transformation

-Partner, APO Finance

-Principal, APO Insurance Solutions Group Investment Accounting

  • Lead a team of investment accounting officers, directors, managers and professionals across multiple locations (Los Angeles, West Des Moines and New York) who are responsible for both GAAP and Regulatory financial investment reporting.
  • Oversee SOX control environment related to investment accounting financial reporting functions, processes and procedures to ensure they are executed in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Provide regular updates to senior management keeping them abreast of any issues or accomplishments of the team.
  • Develop and perform various analytical procedures to assist senior management in understanding the company’s investment performance relative stated strategies and objectives.
  • Monitor and adjust workload across the team, as needed, to ensure that requirements are met effectively.
  • Responsible for ensuring all staff members are cross trained to ensure adequate coverage can be provided as needed.
  • Serve as control owner for investment accounting SOX controls. Consistently review and modify (as needed) all SOX controls to ensure they are applicable to the team’s processes.
  • Stay abreast of market conditions, investment strategies, the changing accounting literature or regulatory guidance to ensure compliance. 


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.  
  • 10 plus years of experience in an investment accounting function with demonstrated progressive managerial experience.
  • 5 plus years of management experience
  • Strong knowledge of Fixed Income, Structured Securities, Mortgage Loans, Alternative Investments.  Derivatives knowledge is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively interface with senior management across both Athene and Apollo.  
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and process improvement experience.
  • A strong detailed orientation while being able to see how the details impact the larger strategic objectives of the company
  • PAM experience is a plus
  • Public Accounting experience is a plus
  • Location – Los Angeles


-Majority of the team plus many key Apollo associates are in Los Angeles.

-LA office follows a hybrid work schedule (3/2); free breakfast and lunch M-Th.


$257,440.00 - $386,160.00 USD Annual


Annual Salary for this role is market competitive.  Actual salary for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.  Depending on the role, a discretionary bonus plan or variable sales incentive may be included.
