Position Summary:

Provides direct assistance to the surgeon(s) during surgical procedures.

Surgical First Assistants role as defined by the American College of Surgeons are responsible for providing aid in exposure, providing hemostasis (clamping and or tying off bleeders, use of esu), and suturing. Works under the guidance of the surgeon. Shares responsibility for the care and safety of the patients who come under his or her care. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for the ensuring effective communication between him or her and the circulating nursing, the patient, other staff, physician and other hospital departments. Assists with orienting new employees and students as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
  • Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
  • Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems under direction of the surgeon
  • Follow guidance of supervising nurse to ensure that the special needs of the patient are met to include age, handicaps and disease/illness.
  • Communicates pertinent information to circulating nurse for documentation as appropriate for the age groups served.
  • Assembles, disassembles, handles instruments and equipment according to policy/procedure to ensure proper function and prevent damage, etc.
  • Acts as primary scrub tech or assistant as needed
  • Exhibits efficient use of time and resources. Manages back table and sterile field to prevent contamination and increase efficiency during the procedure.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterile technique, principles of aseptic technique and appropriate scrub technique through day to day practice.
  • Acts as a resource person for orientees and students on the unit. Serves as a resource for other nursing staff.
  • May assist in placement of subsequent trocars under direct visualization and surgeon direction. Prohibited to place initial trocars.
  • May preform local anesthetic injection under supervision of surgeon. Must have annual competency to preform. Competency sign-off must be completed by privileged surgeon. Injections are limited to intradermal subcutaneous, deep tissue, and intra-articular.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent - Required
Minimum Education
Graduate of a Program in Discipline - Required
Graduate of a surgical assisting program and holds a Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assist Certification.
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Basic Life Support (BLS) to be obtained within 30 days
