Job Description

Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.

A little about us:

Yahoo is a global media and tech company that connects people to their passions. We reach nearly 900M people around the world, bringing them closer to what they love — from news and sports, to finance, shopping and gaming — with the trusted products, content and tech that fuel their day.

At Yahoo News, we are laser-focused on making discovery delightful and becoming the world’s best curator for our 35 million daily users and expanding our distribution to meet millions more users where they are. Our North Star is to be a trusted guide to high quality digital content, empowering you to make informed choices and achieve your goals, big and small. Building the best guide to the Internet (and the world) requires building the best team.

A lot about you:

Yahoo News is seeking an entrepreneurial political ”Guide” to help lead our coverage of the 2024 election cycle and beyond. This is a new role and will extend beyond the bounds of traditional reporting. Your primary function will be to help readers understand politics through a mixture of writing, curation, video, social presence, newsletters, and analysis across platforms. You will become a familiar and expected face and voice for our audience. You're comfortable at the center of a franchise and will be the go-to source for our readers on an issue or topic. You will connect people with politics in a way that makes clear how government and policies impact their lives – you understand the inner workings of the Washington bubble but you are far more passionate about illuminating what really matters to those who live outside it. You make the work accessible and relevant. A large part of this role will entail diving into the broad spectrum of content from Yahoo’s partner network and creating new, digestible experiences to best surface the stories to help readers navigate the election and get caught up and informed quickly.

At Yahoo, our Guides are multifaceted journalists who help users decode complex topics and news narratives. You possess a wide array of journalistic skills and are able to deploy them in the most effective way to reach readers. You are relentlessly focused on facts, delivering a non-partisan report, and quickly identifying important narratives that haven't gotten enough attention. You have prior experience in a fast-paced newsroom. You’re plugged into conversations happening in social communities as part of your news-gathering process, and you have a proven track record of starting and shaping those conversations. As part of the Yahoo News team, expect to work in all formats: live blogs, newsletters, social video and other new exciting things yet to emerge.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a lead Guide and distinctive voice for Yahoo News 2024 election and broader politics coverage, delivering strong curation and digestible explanatory features in multimedia formats across platforms (newsletter, guidebooks, social, etc.)

  • Manage multiple projects and meet several daily deadlines – one day’s work might involve contributing to a live blog, work on a core format like the Yahoo News 360 while also creating a video version of your work for social platforms

  • Attend regular editorial meetings that outline daily and long-term content priorities

  • Spot unique angles and narratives to help Yahoo News journalism stand out

  • Active, engaged (and facts-forward and non-partisan!) external-facing presence as the Yahoo News Politics Guide

  • Find ways to make our journalism connect with new and diverse audiences

  • Interact with an array of teams, including newsletters, social media, video production, curation and copy editing

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional newsroom experience, some of that as a dedicated politics reporter covering elections at a competitive news outlet, and some in experimental, non-traditional audience roles, including curation, social or newsletters

  • Professional, adaptable and collegial in a fast-paced, innovative product environment

  • Comfortable reporting on camera for on-network and social video platforms

  • Solid news judgment and a strong portfolio of work that demonstrates your ability to break down complex topics and connect with a general audience

  • Passion for innovative digital storytelling experiences

  • Active social media presence, a sizable following, and a history of positively engaging with online communities in a non-partisan way

  • Willingness to work occasional nights, weekends, or whenever news demands
