Job Description

Support Center - Irving

The Director - Domestic Transportation is responsible for the management of all domestic transportation operations for The Michaels Companies. This includes all modes to/from stores and to/from distribution centers. This position provides leadership of over $200 million in spend across intermodal, TL, LTL, dedicated multi-stop TL, pool distribution delivery, and on-demand delivery. Expertise leveraging advanced transportation planning and optimization systems such as BlueYonder, and P44 is required. Management of a team of centralized and remote transportation professionals is required.

Major Activities

Leadership of External Partners

  • Lead and serve as the operational relationship manager with transportation providers directing quarterly business reviews, business partnership expectations and communications,   and day-to-day operational oversight of the domestic network.
  • Provide leadership that ensures measurement of business partner performance and continual identification of alternatives to ensure continuity of service and operations.

Leadership of Internal Partners & Team

  • Direct and provide leadership of a team of transportation professionals in their execution of daily and weekly transportation transactions establishing expectations, reporting requirements, and business rules for partnership management.
  • Provide leadership, performance feedback, and career development to transportation management team members.
  • Collaborate and proactively communicate with cross-functional business leaders on transportation initiatives, issues, and goals to ensure alignment and gain buy-in for business initiatives and changes.  Primary business partners include distribution centers, supply chain planning, inventory management, store operations, finance, merchandising, technology, and human resources.

Drive Efficiency and Innovation

  • Identify optimal processes and external business partnerships to drive cost and service improvements across the enterprise.
  • Lead the identification and prioritization of domestic transportation reporting and technology enhancements that drive efficiency in transactional processes, eliminate manual activities, and enable efficient utilization of transportation staff.

Business Planning & Financials

  • Provide leadership to determine weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual transportation capacity resource needs and ensure business plans and processes are actioned to ensure support of business volumes across nodes and channels.
  • Lead, establish, and enhance the operational and financial reporting that accurately forecasts all domestic transportation volume and expenditures.
  • Identify industry trends across all modes to accurately plan for changes in capacity availability and rates.  Adjust operational, financial, and contingency plans based on ever-changing market conditions.

Minimum Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or significant substitutable experience.
     

Minimum Special Certifications or technical skills

  • Fully proficient in MS applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Minimum Type of experience the job requires

  • 15+ years of experience in large-scale transportation/supply chain operations
  • In-depth experience utilizing and leveraging advanced transportation systems such as BlueYonder (JDA), ProShip, and FourKites.  Must have worked and lead in an environment with highly automated transportation processes.
  • Deep and detailed industry knowledge and experience across all domestic modes: LTL, TL, intermodal, parcel, dedicated fleet operations, and on-demand home delivery.
  • Significant experience in sourcing, negotiating, and managing dedicated fleet operations for store deliveries.
  • Experience and ability to collaborate and communicate within a complex omni-channel retail organization.
  • Experience in working with ecommerce operations leaders to solve business and customer service challenges and issues.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree with Supply Chain Transportation focus

Preferred Type of experience the job requires

  • Transportation management experience in a specialty retail organization with at least $150M in domestic transportation spend
  • Subject matter expertise in BlueYonder Transportation Management, BlueYonder Freight Order Management, FourKites, and ProShip
  • Extensive experience in ecommerce transportation, including knowledge of parcel, regional parcel, USPS, and on-demand solutions providers.
