JOB OPPORTUNITY:  Design Engineer - Valves

The Design Engineer will have knowledge of valve types including control valves, valve design, valve applications, valve trim, actuation (manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric) valve accessories (positioners, etc.), hydrostatic testing, and seat testing. Provide engineering services required to support Copes-Vulcan products including but not limited providing engineering input for quotations, sales orders, design accuracy, shop information, control valve sizing, and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities include configuring products and designs to specific customer applications, creating or approving product design layouts, drawings, and bills of material for sales orders and projects, rationalization of existing product lines, redesign for cost reductions, quality, specifications, product standardization, and product line expansions for valve product lines assigned. Individual may be involved in new product development, redesigns of existing products, and general laboratory testing for proof of concept and evaluation testing. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise as it relates to codes and standards applicable to the Copes business. Design assignments may include both cast and fabricated products for Copes and M&J products.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations, design, and analysis as required to ensure and maintain structural and mechanical integrity of new and existing products.
  • Develops product design whether new and expansionary, incremental, or for maintenance that meet Celeros marketing goals. Analyzes research data and proposed product specifications to determine feasibility of product proposals.
  • Familiarity with general manufacturing processes and materials, including castings fabrication, forgings, stamping, 3D printing, machining, EDM, heat treating, tempering, plating, non-destructive testing methods (RT, UT, MP, LP hardness, and PMI).
  • Contributes to the efficient running of the Design and Development process. Ensures timely and commercially effective completion of assigned projects to meet customer requirements.
  • Reviews customer specifications and inquiries to determine correct application of product and to resolve any conflicts or ambiguities. Works with sales and customer to get clarification and understanding of job requirements. Prepares Specification Sheets and checks against quotation and purchase order documents to ensure accuracy and adequacy of instructions.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with other departments to facilitate communications and operations within the company.
  • Process sales orders including creating bill of material and partial releases.
  • Check and/or approve drawings, bills of material, specifications and reports as required.
  • Write engineering specifications and reports as required.
  • Initiates “Engineering Change Notice” as required when changes are made to product design, drawings, or manufacturing processes. Reviews and approves revisions to drawings, bills of material, and procedures as required by internal procedures, API Q1, and ISO.
  • Subject matter expert with industry specifications such as ASME B16.34, ASME B&PV Code Sections I, II, III and VIII, Nb codes, 10 CFR-21, etc. and able to interpret and apply as required. Become familiar with API 6D..Keep personal knowledge current.
  • Recommends and approves disposition of in-process product nonconformities. May assist manufacturing engineering to do this. Reviews and approves requests for part or material substitutions.
  • Reviews and authorizes variances on shop floor and determines if permanent change is required. Initiates change process to follow up when necessary.
  • Facilitate development of project plans with assistance from Engineering and other departments. Manage all projects within scope of responsibility to meet desired deadlines and outcomes. Work with other departments frequently to ensure projects are meeting established goals.
  • May assist in development of test apparatus as required to accurately test products. Apparatus must be safe to use, minimize cost and provide data necessary to adequately analyze the product.
  • May provide technical follow-up after project release, including field assistance.
  • Prepares or works with others in preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics and design for manufacturability.
  • May direct and coordinate manufacturing or building of prototype product or systems.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications. Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses.
  • Be proficient in computer assisted engineering and design software (AutoCAD, Inventor, MathCad, Office, etc.) and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks. Should be familiar with drafting standards and practices including GD&T and apply them to drawing creation or mark-up.
  • Performs other work-related assignments deemed necessary and appropriate by supervisor.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Individual must have the ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and operations to develop and check design validity.
  • Shall have the ability to design and generate creative mechanical solutions; translate concepts and information into images; apply design principles, solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Must be able to demonstrate attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills, and the ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of valve design is required.
  • Should have excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, a self-starter, have a sense of urgency, be personable and well organized.
  • Must be able to perform the principal duties and responsibilities of the position and be able to work responsibly without close supervision individually or in a team environment.
  • Should be able to interpret and follow instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Travel may be required up to 25% of the time to visit customer sites, support the Houston facility, training, etc.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) from four-year College or university in Mechanical Engineering or related field and a minimum of three (3) or more years related experience in valve product design role.
  • MSME and professional engineer license preferred. Experience in ANSYS and Fluent a plus.
